Most CRA tax refunds in 2026 arrive within 2 weeks if you NETFILE with direct deposit. Paper-filed returns can take up to 8 weeks. Filing in the first half of April runs roughly 5 days faster than filing in the final week before the April 30 deadline.

April 2026 refund timeline
Roughly 60% of Canadians file in the last 14 days before the April 30 deadline, which is why CRA processing slows mid-to-late April. If you NETFILE and:
- Filed April 1–10: refund typically arrives April 14–24.
- Filed April 11–22: refund typically arrives April 25–May 6.
- Filed April 23–30: refund typically arrives May 7–18.
- Filed May 1+ (late): refund follows normal 2-week NETFILE timing, but interest and penalties may apply if you owed.
Why refunds get delayed
- Credit or deduction review: claims for medical expenses, tuition transfers, charitable donations, or rental losses can trigger a manual review.
- T4 / slip mismatch: if your employer's reported T4 doesn't match what you entered, the CRA pauses processing.
- Existing CRA balance: the refund is automatically applied to GST/HST owing, prior-year balances, or family debts.
- Identity verification: first-time filers, newcomers, or unusual address changes may receive an identity request letter.
- Amended return (T1-ADJ): changes to a previously assessed return take 8–10 weeks.
How to check your refund status
Sign in to CRA My Account. Under Tax returns, you'll see one of three statuses:
- In process: CRA has received and is assessing your return.
- Assessed: processing complete; refund or balance owing is calculated.
- Refund issued: direct deposit date or cheque mail date is shown.
The phone option is the automated TIPS line at 1-800-959-1956 — but it's the same information you'd see online.
