CGEB One-Time Top-Up June 5, 2026 — Amount, Eligibility, and Date

TL;DR
Ottawa confirmed a one-time CGEB top-up payment landing Friday, June 5, 2026. The amount equals roughly 50% of your January 2026 GST/HST credit — about $179 for a single adult and up to $467 for a family of four. No application required if you've filed your 2024 return.
What happened
On April 17, 2026, Parliamentary Secretary Wayne Long confirmed that the Canada Revenue Agency will issue a one-time top-up to recipients of the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) on June 5, 2026. The top-up is a transitional measure bridging the gap between the final GST/HST credit cycle (which ends in July 2026) and the first full CGEB payment quarter starting October 2026. The top-up amount is set at 50% of the recipient's January 2026 GST/HST credit.
The payment is automatic. Anyone who filed a 2024 income tax return and qualified for the GST/HST credit will receive the deposit by direct deposit (or cheque, if no banking is on file) on the morning of June 5. There is no separate application, no form to submit, and no need to contact the CRA.
What it means for you
For most Canadians on the GST/HST credit, this is roughly one extra month of grocery money landing in early June. If you're planning travel, summer camp registrations, or a back-to-school spend, the timing is helpful. The amount is non-taxable, doesn't reduce other benefits (CCB, OAS-GIS, provincial top-ups), and won't push you into a new tax bracket.
If you usually receive your GST/HST credit by mailed cheque, expect a 5–10 business day lag versus direct deposit. The fastest way to make sure you get the June 5 deposit on time is to set up direct deposit through CRA My Account before May 20.
The numbers
| Household | Jan 2026 GST/HST credit | June 5 top-up (50%) |
|---|---|---|
| Single adult, no kids | $358 | $179 |
| Single parent, 1 child | $547 | $274 |
| Couple, no kids | $547 | $274 |
| Couple, 2 children | $933 | $467 |
Amounts assume the maximum credit at zero adjusted family net income. Higher-income households see proportionally smaller top-ups based on their January 2026 entitlement.
What's next
The June 5 top-up is the last payment under the legacy GST/HST credit framework. The full CGEB regime takes over starting July 4, 2026 with a higher base amount (~15% increase versus the current GST/HST credit) and quarterly payments. We've covered the structural change in our CGEB replacement explainer and full eligibility rules in our 2026 CGEB guide.
Use the CGEB calculator to estimate your post-July 2026 quarterly amount, and the CGEB eligibility checker if you're unsure whether you qualify (newcomers, students, and dependants have specific rules).
