Outside Quebec, child benefits in Canada are essentially "the federal CCB plus a small provincial top-up the CRA bundles automatically." Quebec is structurally different. The province runs its own family benefits agency (Retraite Québec) and pays the Allocation famille as a fully separate program. Quebec families receive both — the federal CCB on the 20th of each month, plus the Quebec Family Allowance four times per year (January, April, July, October).
For a Quebec family with two children and $55,000 income, the math typically looks like this: roughly $13,500/yr from the federal CCB, plus $5,800/yr from the Quebec Family Allowance, plus $242 in July for school supplies if the kids are aged 4–16. Total: about $19,500/yr tax-free.
Quebec adds a single-parent supplement of up to $1,026/yr on top of the base allocation. The supplement uses a lower phase-out threshold ($43,484 vs $59,341 for couples), reflecting the higher cost of raising children alone. Even if your base allocation is fully phased out, the single-parent supplement has its own minimum guaranteed amount of $410/yr.
Each July, Retraite Québec pays an extra $121 per child aged 4 to 16 on September 30 of that year, regardless of family income. It lands as a separate deposit, not bundled with the July quarterly payment. A Quebec family with three school-aged children gets $363 every July automatically.
If your child was born in Quebec and you registered the birth with the Directeur de l'état civil, enrollment is automatic — Retraite Québec is notified and the first payment lands in the next quarterly cycle. If your child was born outside Quebec, was adopted, or you're a newcomer to the province, you'll need to apply via Retraite Québec's online service "My Account" or by submitting form LPF-800. See our newcomers checklist for the full first-year benefits sequence.
The Allocation famille is based on residency on the first day of each quarter. If you move into Quebec, your first Quebec payment is the next quarterly cycle after your move. If you move out of Quebec, your last payment is the quarterly cycle covering the period you were still resident. The federal CCB picks up the slack monthly through the CRA in either direction.
