Every biweekly employee in Canada paid on Fridays belongs to one of two cohorts, and their extra months differ. The cohort whose first 2026 payday is Friday, January 2 collects third cheques in January and July. The alternate cohort — first payday January 9 — gets May and October. Same salary, same frequency, different bonus months: which is why you have to check your own anchor date rather than a generic list.
A third biweekly cheque is roughly 7.7% of your annual gross (1 of 26) arriving in a month where your fixed bills are already covered by the other two. The highest-value uses, in order for most people: knock down credit-card debt (interest math in our payoff calculator), pad the emergency fund, then invest the rest through TFSA or RRSP room — the RRSP route also shrinks next spring's tax bill.
