If a website is asking you to pay a fee, share your SIN, or upload immigration documents to "claim" your Welcome Canada $500, it's a scam. Real federal benefits never require third-party intermediaries. Below: what's actually available, in three tiers.
1. Bank welcome bonuses (the real "Welcome Canada $500")
All six major Canadian banks run dedicated newcomer programs that pay cash bonuses for opening a chequing account within ~2 years of landing. Typical conditions: set up direct deposit, complete a minimum number of debit transactions, and stay open for 6+ months.
Compare side-by-side on our Best Bank for Newcomers page. Offers change quarterly — always confirm current terms with the bank before signing up.
2. Federal benefits (the actual government money for newcomers)
These are the real federal payments newcomers can access — not as a single welcome cheque, but as ongoing quarterly or monthly support based on your income:
Canada Child Benefit (CCB) — up to $7,787/yr per child under 6, $6,570 for 6–17. Apply with form RC66 once you arrive. Estimate your CCB →
CGEB / 2026 Grocery Rebate — up to $680/yr for a single adult, $650 for couples, plus $130 per child. Quarterly tax-free payments starting July 5, 2026. Estimate your CGEB →
GST/HST credit — quarterly until June 2026, then replaced by CGEB. Newcomers register with form RC151. GST/HST credit calculator →
Provincial benefits — Ontario Trillium Benefit, BC Family Benefit, Alberta Child and Family Benefit, etc. Auto-paid alongside federal benefits once you file your first Canadian tax return.
First-year newcomer benefit total (rough)
A family of four (two adults, two kids under 6) earning $40,000 typically receives roughly $15,500–$18,000 in tax-free federal + provincial benefits in their first full benefit year — far more than any one-time "welcome bonus." See our full Newcomer Benefits Checklist for the complete stack.
IRCC-funded settlement agencies sometimes administer modest one-time settlement grants — usually $200–$2,500 per family depending on the program and your situation. These are not automatic; you apply in person at a settlement organization in your province.
Examples: COSTI (Ontario), ISSofBC (British Columbia), MOSAIC (BC), Calgary Catholic Immigration Society (Alberta), Centre Social d'Aide aux Immigrants (Quebec). See our full directory in Settlement Services for Newcomers.
Scam alert: how to spot fake "Welcome Canada $500" sites
Asks for your SIN, immigration document numbers, or banking passwords.
Demands a "processing fee" or "release fee" to claim your bonus.
URLs that look official but aren't canada.ca or a real bank domain.
Pressure tactics: "claim within 24 hours" or "limited spots."
Texts or WhatsApp messages claiming to be from CRA, IRCC, or Service Canada offering an instant cash transfer.
Real federal benefits are never claimed via a third-party site. Always verify on canada.ca or directly through a bank's official site.
