The federal government announced the one-time payment on April 17, 2026 as a transitional bridge between the final GST/HST credit cycle and the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) launching in July 2026. The top-up is set at exactly 50% of the recipient's January 2026 quarterly GST/HST credit.
That January 2026 quarterly amount is itself one-quarter of your annual GST/HST credit, which CRA computes as:
| Household | 2024 income | Annual credit | June 5 top-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single adult | $25,000 | ~$709 | ~$89 |
| Single parent, 1 child | $30,000 | ~$888 | ~$111 |
| Couple, no children | $40,000 | ~$446 | ~$56 |
| Couple, 2 children | $50,000 | ~$580 | ~$73 |
| Couple, 2 children | $70,000 | ~$0 | $0 |
