Canada launched the world's first spot Bitcoin ETF (BTCC, by Purpose Investments) in February 2021 — three years before the US approved equivalents. Today, Canadian investors can buy spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs directly on the TSX, in TFSA, RRSP, and FHSA accounts, without ever touching a crypto exchange.
The four main spot Bitcoin ETFs are BTCC (Purpose), EBIT (Evolve), BTCX (CI), and FBTC (Fidelity). MERs cluster between 1.00% and 1.50% — far higher than equity ETFs but vastly cheaper than the implicit fees of holding on a centralized crypto exchange. All are CDIC-style structured: the underlying Bitcoin is held in cold storage with regulated custodians (typically Gemini Custody or Coinbase Custody). They are not insured against Bitcoin price drops, only against custody failure.
